March is the month in which we recall and celebrate the important contributions of women as well as acknowledge their continued influence in our society today. Trailblazing women have reinvented themselves and added to human knowledge and skill in every field and area of life.

Sojourner Truth went from being a slave to becoming only African American woman who gained a national reputation on the lecture platform in the days before the Civil War. Additionally, in a country where African Americans had not yet gained the right to vote, she had the distinction of being the first African American woman to win a lawsuit.

Madame C.J. Walker, transformed herself from a door to door saleswoman of her own cosmetic innovations into the first female millionaire. She went on to use her wealth and influence to aid in having lynching recognized as a federal crime in the United States. Additionally, she donated large sums of her money and time to the NAACP's anti-lynching campaign and later in her life revised her will to support black schools, organizations, individuals, orphanages, retirement homes, as well as YWCAs and YMCAs.

Prior to her entry into politics, Maxine Waters was a teacher and a volunteer coordinator in the Head Start program.Throughout her 30 years of public service, Maxine Waters has been on the cutting edge, tackling difficult and often controversial issues. She has combined her strong legislative and public policy acumen and high visibility in Democratic Party activities with an unusual ability to do grassroots organizing. Congresswoman Maxine Waters is considered by m any to be one of the most powerful women in American politics today. She has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoken advocate for women, children, people of color and the poor.

These, and many other trailblazing women, have left a legacy for us to follow. In today’s economy, with millions of people being laid off on a weekly basis and families having to struggle to simply make ends meet, women are called upon to be as resourceful as our sisters of yesteryear and to do what it takes to “make it happen.” As women, we possess a strong and insurmountable strength to face the odds that confront us in any given situation. We find that even in the most trying times, we can call upon our inner strength and find reason to celebrate. Let’s do it together!

Computers have become the backbone of our society,facilitating how we do just about everything. With just a few clicksit's possible to connect with hundreds, if not thousands or evenmillions of people! Therefore, knowing how to successfully operate acomputer can make a huge difference in one's day to day and, as wewill see, in one's career.

Almost every job today requires computer skills as a necessaryprerequisite to applying. In fact, "most employers simply take it forgranted that applicants naturally have the required computerexpertise. In other words, these skills are now part of the basicminimum requirements to apply." The Women's Employment Opportunity Project (WEOP), Inc., a non- profit organization located in Atlanta, Georgia near Grant Park, is seeking interns for the summer of Fall Semester.

WEOP would like to secure students that are interested in community service related work for special projects and programs that are geared towards women.

We need to find out what department we can contact regarding possible interns – paid or unpaid – as well as find out if there is a department that handles interns for college credit, independent research projects, etc.

It's that time of year again! There is no better way to celebrate fall, than with a new bag! The only catch is that you get to celebrate for a good cause.
Every year, WEOP hosts a special networking and fundraising event to help women achieve economic self sufficiency.
WEOP’s mission is to empower women with marketable job skills; provide training and technical support for business development; and connect clients to resources and networks for business and employment opportunities.
The theme for the annual fundraising event this year is - “Let’s Get Purse“N”All” , a bazaar featuring new and gently used purses and accessories.

The event is scheduled for November 1, 2008, from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Donations will support technology training, financial literacy workshops, business development classes and the expansion of the Technology lab.

Last Tuesday, September 23rd, WEOP welcomed local entrepreneur Lynn Hood CEO, of Atlanta’s Hood Marketing Solutions as a guest instructor. Lynn Hood has been in the business for over two decades, and is active in a number of organizations throughout Atlanta. A founding member of SEMDA and Chairman of the Branding Subcommittee for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce’s Technology Marketing Initiative; actively involved with Georgia Bio and resides on the Advisory Board of its Emerging Leaders Network. She serves as marketing chair for the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta and is a member of the Technology Association of Georgia.
Lynn founded Hood Marketing Solutions back in 1988, to help companies strategically position themselves in the marketplace and increase sales through innovative, cost-effective marketing and advertising. Specializing in reaching highly targeted audiences, Hood focuses on the business-to-business, health sciences and high tech markets. The agency is known for outstanding client service and creative that works.

Lynn brought her own personal touch to discussing how to strategically promote your business online with social networking sites and the importance of implementing a strategy to market and promotes your business online. Tonya, one of the Business Innovations students, said “This session brought to life what we have learned over the last few weeks. Ms. Hood showed real life examples; using her clients as case examples of what we can really do. I was amazed with the numbers and exposure that the Internet provides for business owners.”

WEOP continues to find that empowering women, allows them to empower themselves and that technology is the currency of success in the business world.

WEOP - helping Entrepreneurs STEP UP WITH TECHNOLOGY

Business today is inseparable from technology.
From a new entrepreneur upstart to International Corporation, it is impossible to be in business today without confronting the issues of technology. The way we do business today is different than 30 years ago. The average job requires much more than hard work and determination; although they remain priceless, most employers are asking for more. Technology has evolved in multiple arenas: telecommunication, education, marketing, travel, shipping, even around our daily lives. Business opportunities that never imagined before are now entering our language and are available at our fingertips. While technology has made the impossible possible, it has changed the working environment for everyone. For some it has been a blessing, for others it has been more of a curse.
The launching of the“Innovative Business Technology Series” encourages women to utilize the power of technology to promote and grow their businesses. Statistics indicate that women need to harness the power of the Internet, and use it as a resource. In 2006, a total of 51% of professional occupations in the US were held by women. Only 26% were related to IT occupations, and only 13 % of corporate office positions at Fortune 500 technology companies. In 2007, women held more than half of all professional occupations in the U.S., but fewer than 26 % of all computing-related occupations.
Since September, WEOP has been conducting a Business Social Innovation Class. Comprised of a small group of entrepreneurs, focused on utilizing Web 2.0 to boost business for marketing and business opportunities; discussing social networks, e-mail marketing, and familiarizing women with the resources that will lead their businesses to success.

WEOP is stepping up, with programs that further the mission of empowerment of women with technology. The classes will continue into January 2009, where hundreds of women will gain exposure to resources available online technology. Co-Founder, Antoinette Ball says, “It is our goal to encourage women to launch online businesses on the web and to acquire the skills they need to be successful".

Airtran Recognizes “Women Who Inspire”

On March 14, 2008 LaTarsha Williams was presented with with two roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental United States, courtesy of AirTran Airlines. Two years ago to the day when LaTarsha William’s husband abandoned her and their family, she was being recognized at the 2nd Annual “From a Woman’s Perspective” conference as the first recipient of the “Women Who Inspire” award.

LaTarsha Williams, a native to Atlanta, has faced and triumphed over a multitude of challenges in her lifetime. After escaping an abusive relationship, Ms. Williams and her six children found themselves homeless. With faith and support from the community, Ms. Williams was able to return to school and then started her own contracting firm “Lady Contractor.”

When she regained control of her life, she vowed to do her part to help end the homeless epidemic amongst women with children. In 2003, she founded The Omega House,” a non-profit that provides temporary shelter, life coaching, counseling and employment development services for homeless women and their families.

The Airtran airline tickets are a blessing to LaTarsha’s family, especially since eldest son Felipe Holden joined the U.S. Marine Corp in December 2007. She plans to use the tickets to reunite their family while Felipe is on leave for the four-day Easter weekend in March. Airtran donated the tickets as the sponsor of the first annual “Women Who Inspire” award for use as the grand prize.

The “Women Who Inspire” award recognizes women from all walks of life who exemplify a commitment to improving their community and their family or non-profit through innovative, leadership and a willing heart. Over 100 participants, speakers and volunteers joined The Women’s Employment Opportunity Project, Mother’s Voices of Georgia and the East Point Community Action Team in celebrating Women’s History Month at the 2nd Annual “From a Woman’s Perspective” conference on March 14, 2008 at the Atlanta Technical College.

Headlining the event was Michele Hoskins, founder and CEO of Michele Foods. Hoskins shared wisdom learned during her remarkable rise from economic hardship to entrepreneurial success. A truly inspiring woman, Michele’s frank keynote address was followed by an open question and answer session when she fielded questions from the audience on a range of topics.

The conference also featured a phenomenal line up of speakers! The morning panel featured: Sandra Murillo Weber of Turner Broadcasting System; Ann Wilson Cramer of IBM; Dr. Elizabeth Ford of DeKalb County Board of Health; Dr. Folami Prescott-Adams of HomeMade Jamz Productions; and Paulette Lewis of Region IV Women's Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor. The afternoon included other dynamic speakers such as Nancy J. Lewis of Progressive Techniques, Valerie Hoff of 11 Alive News, Faye Adams Taylor of Taylor-Made Productions, Vic Bolton of Affiliated Media and Wanda Johnson of LeadershipMatters!

The excitement is in the air for the 2nd annual “From A Woman’s Perspective” conference, a special event coordinated by three fantastic organizations: The Women’s Employment Opportunity Project, Inc., Mother’s Voices of Georgia and The East Point Community Action Team (EP-CAT). We bring together women from all socio-economic backgrounds to discuss issues that are important.

This exciting event features a phenomenal line up of speakers which include: Sandra Murillo Weber, Turner Broadcasting System; Ann Wilson Cramer, IBM; Condace Pressley, WSB 750 Radio; Dr. Elizabeth Ford, DeKalb County Board of Health; Dr. Folami Prescott-Adams, HomeMade Jamz Productions; and Paulette Lewis. Region IV Women’s Bureau, U.S. Department of Labor.

The highlight of our program will be Ms. Michele Hoskins, founder and owner of Michelle Foods and three-time guest of the Oprah Winfery Show, will be featured as the luncheon speaker.
